SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA — Ken Calvert and Young Kim advanced to the general election for California's 40th Congressional District after the top-two primary held on June 2, 2026. Calvert received 35% of the vote, and Kim received 21% of the vote. Six other candidates appeared on the primary ballot.
Voters approved Proposition 50, a redistricting amendment, in November 2025. This amendment redrew congressional boundaries, placing Calvert and Kim in the same district. Calvert currently represents California's 41st Congressional District, while Kim represents the 40th District.
The newly drawn 40th District incorporates 51% of Calvert's previous district and 35% of Kim's previous district. Based on 2024 presidential election results, the redrawn district leans 10 percentage points more Republican compared to the previous district. The general election for the district is scheduled for November 3, 2026.
California utilizes a top-two primary election system, sometimes referred to as a "jungle primary." Under this system, all candidates appear on a single ballot regardless of party affiliation. The two candidates who receive the most votes proceed to the general election, also regardless of party affiliation.
Calvert was first elected to Congress in 1992. He earned an associate degree from Chaffey College and a bachelor's degree from San Diego State University. Before his election to Congress, he owned small businesses in the restaurant and real estate industries. Calvert said. "Ken's legislative work has received top ratings from the Americans for Tax Reform, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Federation of Independent Businesses, National Association of Manufacturers, and the 60 Plus Association."
Kim was first elected to Congress in 2022. She earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Southern California and previously worked as a business owner, financial analyst, and staff member for former U.S. Rep. Ed Royce. She also represented District 65 of the California State Assembly from 2014 to 2016. Kim stated, "In Congress, I fight everyday to ensure President Trump has allies to undo the disastrous Joe Biden-Nancy Pelosi agenda that caused skyrocketing prices, rising crime, open the border, and a political class that does the bidding of the swamp instead of fighting for working families."
